Veteran Grave Registration Database

About This Site

On this site, you can search for Veteran Grave Registration records that we have processed into our system. This is NOT a complete database of all veterans from Union County, New Jersey. It was created using an archived collection of Veteran Grave Registration cards provided to the County Clerk's Office. Some records, containing typos or missing crucial information—such as burial location and date of death—were supplemented using information from the Find a Grave (findagrave.com) and the Congressional Medal of Honor Society (cmohs.org) websites. Consequently, some of the information may not appear on the scanned PDF images.

This database was developed using Microsoft Azure AI Document Intelligence to initially extract text from the cards. The extracted text is then run through a program to clean, correct, and standardize values before being manually checked and verified. Despite this process, there may still be minor spelling errors; please keep this in mind when filling out the search fields. If you find an error, click the "Contact Us" tab and complete the form to send us an email with your concerns. Please attach any supporting evidence to the form for verification if necessary.

After pressing the search button, a results table will appear below. The "ID" column is for internal reference to help locate specific records quickly. The "Original" War and Branch columns display the unedited text extracted by Azure AI, while the "Standard" War and Branch columns are designed to be normalized for easy searching. The "Image" column contains a clickable PDF icon () that will display the front and back of the card associated with the selected record. Some records include four images, or two cards, indicating duplicates where information is split across both. All images have a redacted black box to conceal sensitive information.
